Kurt Lambeck Awarded Balzan Prize. (September 14, 2012)

Australian National University Professor of Geophysics in the Research School of Earth Sciences and former President of the Australian Academy of Science (2006-2010) Kurt Lambeck has been awarded the 2012 Balzan  solid earth sciences prize Prize of CHF750,000 (A$760,000)  for his work on the interplay among glacial melting, sea-level change, and rising landmass resulting from climate change.

The Milan-based International Balzan Prize Foundation annually funds research awards for scholars, scientists, and artists whom it considers to have been overlooked by other prestigious awards.

The second of the two prizes the foundation awarded this year went to Geneticist David Baulcombe of the University of Cambridge for  his work on the epigenetic effects of stress on plant cells and tissue.
