Early-Mid Career Researchers Forum

The voice of Australia’s future scientific leaders

The Australian Academy of Science recognises the challenges faced by Australia's emerging researchers and in 2011, established the Early-Mid Career Researcher Forum (the Forum). The Forum engages with early-mid career scientists from around Australia and advises the Academy on the key issues raised by younger researchers, to help inform its policy recommendations to government. Importantly, the Forum provides a vital connection between Australia's most eminent scientists and tomorrow's future scientific leaders.

The Forum is the national voice of Australia's emerging scientists across multiple disciplines. It examines critical issues including career structure, education, job security, funding, training and gender equity. The Forum liaises with other national organisations, such as the Australian Society for Medical Research, Discoveries Need Dollars and Science & Technology Australia, to positively contribute to Australia's health and economy, and the future careers of our emerging scientific experts.

Science Pathways: Getting Science on the National Agenda

The Forum’s first national meeting, Science Pathways: Getting Science on the National Agenda, will be held at the Shine Dome in Canberra, September 24th - 25th, 2012. We aim to engage early-mid career researchers in active discussions to learn more about the challenges they face and devise some possible solutions. We want you to have your say! Importantly, young researchers can extend their professional skills through an Education Session on policy development and implementation, and a Career Hotspot which will highlight rewarding careers beyond the bench. It will also provide opportunities to network with leading scientific professionals from some of Australia’s top organizations in public and private enterprise. This meeting aims to show early-mid career researchers the many viable career pathways open to them and provide them the know-how on policy and innovation - important to all scientists!

Five reasons to attend

  1. Engage in scientific advocacy – have your say!

  2. Meet and get advice from leading scientific professionals employed at the top organizations in public and private enterprise.

  3. Learn what different career doors open with/without a PhD – important for you and/or your trainees.

  4. Enhance your professional development and get the tools you need to succeed.

  5. Connect with other young scientists – your future colleagues and collaborators.
