We too are opposed to any attempt to employ faculty on personal contracts and therefore oppose the committee. We've repeatedly asked for assurances that any changes in salaries or the like, will not be implemented without prior negotiations with the coordinating council and signature of new collective agreements. So far, the treasury and the prime minister refused (Minister Tamir agreed and supported our demand). Furthermore, VERA recently submitted a document to the committee that includes a section relating to forms of compensation that could develop into personal contracts. At least one of the presidents admitted that pressures were applied to them to yield to the treasury's demands. We thus support the students' strike and ask our colleagues to refrain from any act that could interfere with their strike. Unless situation is changed we are likely to have our own strike next week. Shalom Zvi Prof. Zvi HaCohen, Chairman, Coordinating Council of Faculty Associations ============================================================================= This E-mail will also be shortly posted as item 61 at the bottom of: http://math.haifa.ac.il/yair/censor-notepad.html (*) A TSUNAMI IS THREATENING THE RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES IN ISRAEL: The postings marked by the word *TSUNAMI*, are all related to the struggle against the governmental "Schohat Reform Committee" and against the government refusal to renew the labor contracts with the senior faculty associations. The term tsunami in these messages is simply referring in a general way to a natural phenomenon that carries a potential for great damage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
