Bio-sketch and Research Interests

Yair Censor was born in Rishon LeZion, Israel, in 1943. He received his B.Sc., M.Sc. and D.Sc. degrees in mathematics from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, in 1967, 1969 and 1975, respectively. From 1977 to 1979 he was Research Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, NY, USA, and Research Associate with the Medical Image Processing Group (MIPG) there.
Dr. Censor joined in 1979 the Department of Mathematics at the University of Haifa, Mt. Carmel, Haifa, Israel, where he holds the rank of Full Professor since 1989. With retirement mandatory at the age of 68 in Israeli universities, he became Professor Emeritus on October 1, 2012, continuing his scientific research work without change. He founded (in 2002) The Center for Mathematics and Scientific Computation (CMSC) at the University of Haifa and headed it until 2017. He was a visiting professor or a visiting scholar at The University of Pennsylvania (PENN), Philadelphia, PA, USA; Linköping University (LiU), Linköping, Sweden; The Instituto de Matematica Pura e Aplicada (IMPA), Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil; The University of Cyprus (UCY), Nicosia, Cyprus; The Ciudad Universitaria de Buenos Aires (UBA), Buenos Aires, Argentina; The Thomas Jefferson University (TJU), Philadelphia, PA, USA; The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA; The Beijing International Center of Mathematics, School of Mathematical Sciences, Peking University (PKU), Beijing, P.R. China; The Institute of Operations Research, Department of Applied Mathematics, Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU), Beijing, P.R. China; The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), NY, USA; The Mathematics Division of the National Center for Theoretical Sciences (NCTS/TPE), Taipei, Taiwan; and the Loma Linda University (LLU) in Loma Linda, CA, USA.
Dr. Censor works in Computational Mathematics where his main fields of interest include: Optimization Theory (mathematical theory and development of algorithms), Linear Algebra and Convex Analysis (large and sparse systems of linear and nonlinear equations or inequalities), Numerical Analysis, Inverse Problems, Optimization Theory Techniques in Image Reconstruction from Projections, and in Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Algorithms for Parallel Computing and Iterative methods in matrix balancing, transportation problems and discrete tomography.
Dr. Censor has published over 170 research articles in refereed scientific journals, conference proceedings and as book chapters. He co-authored with S.A. Zenios the book: Parallel Optimization: Theory, Algorithms, and Applications, Oxford University Press, New York, NY, USA, 1997. For this book he received, together with Professor Zenios, from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) "The 1999 ICS (INFORMS Computing Society) Prize for Research Excellence In The Interface Between Operations Research and Computer Science". Dr. Censor served as Associate Editor for the journal IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging from 1992 to 2004. A list of publications and downloadable files of some papers are available from Dr. Censor's homepage and a detailed Curriculum Vitae is available upon request.
Yair Censor is married to Erga Censor and is the father of Aviv, Nitzan and Keren and grandfather of Ofek, Noga, Neta, Almog, Yoav, Dotan and Yarden.
