Snapshot: Coalition Promises to Higher Education as of 24/10/07. (October 25, 2007)
Today's Australian reports:
Federal Education, Science and Training Minister Julie Bishop announced a campaign pledge of $52.5 million for a dental school for James Cook University's Cairns campus.
Liberal MP Peter Lindsay has promised to deliver $10 million in funding to build the second stage of the Creative Arts Centre at JCU Townsville.
Prime Minister John Howard has forayed into opponent Kevin Rudd's Brisbane electorate of Griffith to promise a $13million clinical training school in the private Greenslopes Hospital.
The broadsheet quotes UQ Federation fellow and political scientist Professor John Quiggin as commenting that people who were going to decide their votes on higher education issues were solidly pro-Labor: "Although there has been some turnaround under the last two ministers, the federal Government was openly hostile to the sector when it was elected and has never recovered from that."
Looks like the Coalition's higher education policy is to toss scraps to higher education in electorates where doing so may garner useful support.
