University Rankings 2006, Just for the Record. (March 5, 2007)

Overall rankings of universities remain a contentious issue, nevertheless they continue to be a source of interest, and those of research universities published since 2003 by the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (IHESJTU) are considered by many academics to be the most objective.

A full run down of the listings and explanations of the methods used by IHESJTU are available at: http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2006/ARWU2006TOP500list.htm.

Here we have listed in overall rank order the sixteen Australian Universities that placed in the top 500. Only those universities in the top 100 were given overall scores.

In addition to the overall scores, for the first time IHESJTU has published the top 100 rankings according to "Broad Subject Fields:

Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NS&M)

Engineering / Technology and Computer Sciences (ET/CS)

Life and Agriculture Sciences (L&AS)
