Applications for National Science Week Grants Are Called. (November 8, 2011)

Kim Carr, the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research has announced that applications may now be lodged for grants to participate in National Science Week, August 11 - 19, 2012.

The media release reads:

Do you have a great idea for a science event that will help to promote Australia's outstanding strengths and show how science makes a difference to us and our communities?

In 2012, National Science Week will engage communities across Australia from 11 to 19 August, and your idea, supported by the Australian Government, could be part of it.

Minister for Innovation Senator Kim Carr today officially opened the grant round for funding 2012 National Science Week events.

"National Science Week communicates the important role science plays in making a richer, fairer and greener Australia," Senator Carr said.

"Science helps all Australians by improving our productivity, living standards, health and environment.

"Australia has a lot to be proud of in its scientific endeavour. We are inviting Australians everywhere to be involved in this exciting national festival."

Through the Australian Government's Inspiring Australia initiative, $500,000 is available for grants of between $2,000 and $25,000 for an individual one-year project.

National Science Week 2011 saw over 1.4 million people attend more than 1000 events held across Australia.

An idea could be along the lines of the Scientwists' Critter Cuisine event in 2011, a sell-out gourmet dinner in Echuca in Victoria, featuring a range of insects as a tantalising food source. Or, like the 1:2 billion scale model of the solar system, which artist Christopher Lansell installed along the foreshore between Maroubra and Coogee in Sydney.

This year, for the first time, grants up to $75,000 are also available for large projects over three years.

"Science and research pushes the limits of what we know about the world on a daily basis," Senator Carr said.

"If this is reflected in the creativity of this year's entries, we will have some very exciting events."

Applications open today and close at 5pm on 28 November.
