English children are the best in Europe at science and maths but don't enjoy their lessons, according to the four-yearly Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study. Their position has risen sharply in the league table, placing them only marginally behind the world leaders in the Pacific Rim.

Scottish students, who have not had the same maths strategy, slipped in the study, prompting the Scottish Executive to launch an urgent enquiry into maths and science.
