Don't Read, Do the Experiment. (June 13, 2008)

The 1958 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, Edward Tatum, had an ironic maxim for his students and postdocs, "Don't think, do the experiment".

Now Science reports it's journal reading that's a very costly exercise.

On the other hand peer reviewing amounts to just over 3.2% of overall journal costs.

Perhaps Dr Terry Cutler leading the National Innovation System Review and Professor Denise Bradley looking into Higher Education will take note and recommend a significant cost saving exercise to the ministers to whom they will report.
