A Quick Glance at Private Donations to US Universities. (June 22, 2006)

It may be of interest to have a glance at some of the donations given to US universities both private and public from individuals - just for reference.

Figures are in US dollars

In May this year Stanford University received  $100 million from John Arrillaga, a reclusive Peninsula-based developer.

Columbia University received a $200 million gift from the Dawn Greene and the Jerome L. Greene Foundation.

$165 million gift from oil-company founder and financier Boone Pickens to Oklahoma State University.

$103 million gift to Tufts University.

In 2004, the University of Michigan received a $100 million gift.

And returning to Stanford for a second look: Stanford topped the list of 2005 university donations with more than $603 million while in 2001, it received a $400 million donation from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

And The Chronicle of Higher Education, in a list of the largest private donations to higher education since 1967, reports 66 gifts of $100 million or more, many of them from foundations and many of them in forms other than a one-time cash donation.
