You Sure You Got It Right? "Govt to Boost Research at Universities". (May 5, 2006)

Yesterday early afternoon the aap sent out an item which presumably is based on a deliberate budget leak.

Universities are expected to receive hundreds of millions of dollars in extra funding in this year's budget as part of a government plan to boost research.

Health and medical research is tipped to receive its biggest injection of public funds since 1999, as the government responds to growing criticism of its academic spending.

Education Minister Julie Bishop is also expected to announce major reforms to teacher education following a damning report on literacy.

Labor's spokeswoman Jenny Macklin once again claimed that the  possible increase wouldn't restore the $5 billion in funding cuts the government has inflicted on universities over the past 10 years, and added, ""The OECD Fact Book 2006 shows Australia was one of only five OECD nations to actually reduce government funding for tertiary education per student between 1995 and 2002, alongside the Czech Republic, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Sweden."

Just what will be Labor's education and research policies are yet to be promulgated.

Do you really think the Treasurer is going to up funding for university research by "hundreds of millions of dollars.

Well you never know, but I heard a rumour that when the decision was taken, Cabinet was coming down with something.

Oh, yeah, and did you also notice if a new and brilliant star was rising in the East?
