Ken  Baldwin, Chair of the FASTS' Policy Committee Wins 2004 Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science Through Science Meets Parliament. (August 11, 2004)

    According to the announcement by the Australian Museum, since 1999 hundreds of scientists have met in an annual two-day event to discuss science and promote its importance with members of federal parliament. "The creator of this phenomenon - Ken Baldwin - has received the $10,000 Australian Government Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science for his role in conceiving and championing Science Meets Parliament." In 2003 More than 250 scientists and 150 parliamentarians attended participated.

 

Vicki Sara, former CEO of the Australian Research Council told the Australian Museum, "Science Meets Parliament has brought science onto the radar of politicians and has opened their awareness and understanding of the current and potential way science can improve the quality of life for all Australians."

 

In addition to being Chair of the policy committee for the Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies Dr Baldwin has a a day job as a Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum-Atom Optics at the Australian National University.

 

How Ken Baldwin's initiative will be expanded in future so as to foster proactive support for Australian science and technology by the public and its parliamentarians will be of critical importance to the well being of Australians.
